Photographing High Contrast Scenes
High contrast scenes have always been difficult to photograph mainly because the contrast range is usually beyond the capabilities of film. With the advent of digital cameras and their surge in popularity, it was only a matter of time before technology evolves to make this more readily possible. Now, there is a new electronic technique to capture high contrast scenes.
Called HDR for High Dynamic Range Imaging, the process basically requires a series of photos of the same scene, but exposed for different brightness and contrast levels. These alternately capture highlight, midpoint, and shadow details which are combined through software and blended to produce a single photograph incorporating all the fine details.
