Interlaced and Progressive Scanning

The tightly packed lines in a TV screen paint an image on the display through electronics inside the TV. The moving image is achieved by constantly redrawing these lines at a rapid pace. A standard scanning or that which is often referred to as interlaced scanning redraws the image in two sweeps from top to bottom starting from the odd numbered lines and then the even numbered lines.

Full HD has introduced progressive scanning of the image which redraws the more than 1000 lines by tackling each line in a single sweep instead of using the odd and even approach. This translates into smoother images with minimal blur and flicker.
