During the All Things Digital Conference, Microsoft unveiled its Surface computing platform – a computer that takes the form of a 30-inch tabletop display that uses multi-touch technology to let users interact with it. The setup makes use of existing technologies such as a project to power the display, Bluetooth to connect to actual objects placed on the surface, and Infra-red that acts as a machine vision to sense the multi-touch inputs. The idea of a multi-touch interface has been gaining popularity, especially with the launch of Apple’s iPhone. Microsoft is making a bet on these table-top surface computers as a way to bring multi-touch interfaces into the mainstream.
