There is a growing concern over the prevalence of bugs that are being discovered with Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors, especially with the release of a microcode reliability update from Microsoft. What is alarming though is the claim of OpenBSD founder Theo de Raadt. He said the bugs are non fixable and could actually be exploited from the userland code. The bigger problem though is that the bugs cannot be fixed through standard microcode updates that Intel typically releases.
De Raadt actually said that the latest Intel processors are “buggy as hell”. If de Raadt’s observations are indeed proven true then this could spell a lot of trouble for Intel. The company itself, though not confirming any of de Raadt’s views, sought to downplay it by saying that their microcode updates fix any bugs that are discovered.
