Several studies would show that robotic pets are able to invoke the same feelings and reactions as real pets. Levels of cortisol tend to drop among adults who petted a dog-shaped robot that has some convincing dog-like behavior. It is able to respond when stroked or chase a ball and perk up when a familiar voice is heard.
There are other robotic pets that have been tested with humans. In Japan, interaction of the elderly with a robotic baby seal lowered stress levels, elevated moods and decreased depression. Communication and social behavior among subjects increases brain activity by as much as 50% in patients with dementia. Other helpful robots carry bag or help owners lighten household drudgery.
