The actual loss in terms of dollars can easily be ascertained by multiplying the total down-time by the hourly rates, determining late payment interest or calculating how many sales were lost as a direct result. A short interruption in business operation may result to a minimal cost. However, an unexpected and extended interruption is altogether a different thing.
It may be difficult to quantify emotional and other intangible costs associated with data loss. A data loss situation produces extraordinary pressure on the workforce whether it is due to human error or a logistical problem. The dependence of people on computer-generated information is very high that is why it is not impossible for company shutdowns to happen in the long run when data loss becomes extensive.
