It’s cute, it’s yellow, and boy can it move across the dance floor. But “Keepon”, a robot developed by Marek Michalowski of Carnegie and Hideki Kozima of the National Institute of Communications Technology (NICT), can do a lot more than shake its booty.
While this robot was programmed to pick up musical patterns and move in rhythm, that technology will also allow it to monitor how another person moves. Through an impressive network of motors, wires, and a gimbal (a rather high-tech device that triggers its movements when exposed to audio or visual stimuli) Keepon will be able to “respond” to somebody else’s body language and gestures.
In other words, this robot can socialize—or at least, lay the groundwork for it. Wow. Dance moves, good communication skills. All Keepon needs is a good suit and it’s ready for a date.
