Internet Phone Service for the Deaf

The deaf, including the hearing and speech impaired people are given access to the use of the Internet in making telephone calls without the need for a phone landline. This is now possible courtesy of the National Relay Service which was launched by the Government. The service can also be accessed through laptops or mobile telephones.

Service users need to type their messages so they can be verbally relayed by an operator to the other party in a call. Verbal responses are also typed by the operator. Text telephones connected to landlines were previously used for the purpose. This service hopes to allow users more independence and is touted to be the next big advancement in disability communication.
