As if digital cameras are still not small enough or efficient enough, efforts are being exerted to provide a smaller and faster model that is able to produce incredibly high-resolution pictures. It is believed that it could be done through an overhaul of both hardware and software. The existing digital cameras are only fine versions of film cameras. This makes them inefficient on the standard of being digital as the computer only compresses the picture.
The new camera would function based on a new technique called compressive sensing. It wouldn’t need to compress images, and instead use a single image sensor to collect just enough information. A novel algorithm would then reconstruct a high-resolution image. This technology would surely be of use to the improvement of any imaging system.
